Are you looking for a landscaping idea that’s a little out of the ordinary? Have you considered putting a moon garden in your yard? Moon gardens are highly popular in gardening. And although the practice began in China centuries ago, there’s no reason to believe it won’t catch fire as the latest trend in Minnesota garden designs.
The creative possibilities with moon gardens are seemingly endless. And here’s a link to our Pinterest Moon Gardens board to help you get started.
This post will zero in on the very important question of whether a moon garden is right for you. Here are a few questions that should determine whether you are a person who should consider livening up your landscape with a moon garden.
- Seeking a contemplative spot?
- Do you have a good location?
- Do you have the right plants?
Contemplation is a vital component of moon gardens; after all, lunar gardening has its roots in ancient China, where gardens were used mainly for meditation. If you’re seeking a quiet moonlight spot to lose yourself in the beauty of a moon garden, that makes you a pretty good candidate.
A moon garden needs a good location in order to display optimum elegance. The ideal location is an open area that allows the garden to be flooded by moonlight, so a spot under large trees and shrubs would not work as well. For cloudy nights that feature little or no moonlight, having the garden near a porch or window light would also be a good idea.
The proper composition of plants is also key. Plants that reflect moonlight are great. Therefore white plants and plants with silver foliage can work out wonderfully. And since colors are muted at night, aromas take on more importance – night-blooming plants with strong scents. The moon flower – the white relative of the morning glory – opens its flower buds only at night, and its fragrance is almost intoxicating. Angel’s trumpet and night-blooming jessamine are also good aromatic candidates for moon gardens. (For more on plants that work well in moon gardens, check out this article.)
